How couriers bill

Prices each run by distance zone and service speed (rush, same-day, scheduled), with waiting time, extra stops and after-hours pickups charged on top.

Couriers commonly use "Monthly statement, Net 15", so payment is due 15 days after the invoice date.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Couriers and Messengers $18.43 (employees, not contractor rates).

Courier invoicing tips

  • Print the recipient's name and the signature time for every run on the monthly statement; a firm reconciling forty deliveries matches them by proof of delivery, not by your internal job number.
  • Put the client's matter or case number beside each filing run, because law firms pass courier charges on to their own clients and cannot do that without it.
  • Show advanced filing fees, parking and tolls at cost with the receipts, apart from your delivery charges, so the client's accounts team can code them as disbursements.
  • State your free waiting allowance on every statement and bill waiting in fixed increments; otherwise a driver held at a loading dock or a clerk's window works that time for nothing.

Courier billing disputes to head off

  • A rush package delivered at minute 130 is a common credit request. Recording pickup and delivery timestamps on each line shows whether the promised window was met and when the clock started.
  • Clients often question the zone charged; listing the pickup and drop-off ZIP codes, or the zone map in force, makes every price checkable.

Work a courier can bill for

Core tasks of Couriers and Messengers (O*NET 43-5021.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.

  • Walk, ride bicycles, drive vehicles, or use public conveyances to reach destinations to deliver messages or materials.
  • Load vehicles with listed goods, ensuring goods are loaded correctly and taking precautions with hazardous goods.
  • Unload and sort items collected along delivery routes.
  • Receive messages or materials to be delivered, and information on recipients, such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, and delivery instructions, communicated via telephone, two-way radio, or in person.
  • Plan and follow the most efficient routes for delivering goods.
  • Deliver messages and items, such as newspapers, documents, and packages, between establishment departments and to other establishments and private homes.
