How lawn care businesses bill

Most lawn care is priced per cut by lot size and billed monthly for the visits made, with fertilizer rounds, aeration and cleanups as add-ons.

Lawn care businesses commonly use "Billed monthly for completed visits, Net 15", so payment is due 15 days after the invoice date.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Landscaping and Groundskeeping Workers $18.31 (employees, not contractor rates). The sample's $55.00 per hour for "Spring cleanup: dethatching and debris removal" is 3.0 times that employee figure; a business rate also has to cover insurance, tools, travel, unbilled admin time and profit.

Lawn Care invoicing tips

  • List every visit date in the billing month, because a monthly invoice that just says '4 cuts' gets questioned in a month with a rained-out week or a fifth mowing day.
  • Name the fertilizer or weed control product and which round of your program it was, and add any keep-off time after the application, so the customer knows what went down and when the kids and dog can go back out.
  • Price by measured turf area or lot size rather than by the hour and print it on the invoice, so a neighbor's lower price for a smaller yard does not look like overcharging.
  • Charge an overgrowth or double-cut fee on its own line when the grass has gone two weeks or more between visits at the customer's request, since tall grass takes longer and dulls blades.

Lawn Care billing disputes to head off

  • Customers dispute aeration or fertilizer they did not see happen; giving the date, product and area covered on the invoice shows the work was done.
  • Seasonal customers who stop without notice leave the last month unpaid; stating the cancellation notice in the terms avoids an unpaid final round.

Work a lawn care can bill for

Core tasks of Landscaping and Groundskeeping Workers (O*NET 37-3011.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.

  • Mow or edge lawns, using power mowers or edgers.
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing, removing thatch, or trimming or edging around flower beds, walks, or walls.
  • Use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes.
  • Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws.
  • Gather and remove litter.
  • Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
