How masons bill

Bills brick and block work by square foot of wall face or per unit laid, with repointing and repairs priced by the square foot or hour.

Masons commonly use "Due on completion", so the invoice is payable the day it is issued. A deposit is common to secure the schedule and buy matching brick, which can take weeks to source.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Brickmasons and Blockmasons $29.23 (employees, not contractor rates).

Mason invoicing tips

  • Note the mortar type and color on the invoice; repointing old soft brick with mortar that is too hard can damage the wall, and owners or inspectors may later ask what was used.
  • Bill scaffold setup and teardown as one line and extra rental days separately, since rain and cold can stretch a masonry job well past the planned dates.
  • When brick has to be sourced to match, record where it came from so a later repair can find the same size and color.
  • Cold-weather work needs blankets, heaters or admixtures; list that protection as its own charge with the dates it was in place.

Mason billing disputes to head off

  • Mismatch between new and old mortar color is the most frequent complaint. Writing the date a sample patch was approved by the owner removes most of the argument.
  • Loose brick hidden behind a sound face can double the work; a per-brick replacement price agreed in advance keeps the final invoice predictable.

Work a mason can bill for

Core tasks of Brickmasons and Blockmasons (O*NET 47-2021.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.

  • Construct corners by fastening in plumb position a corner pole or building a corner pyramid of bricks, and filling in between the corners using a line from corner to corner to guide each course, or layer, of brick.
  • Measure distance from reference points and mark guidelines to lay out work, using plumb bobs and levels.
  • Calculate angles and courses and determine vertical and horizontal alignment of courses.
  • Fasten or fuse brick or other building material to structure with wire clamps, anchor holes, torch, or cement.
  • Break or cut bricks, tiles, or blocks to size, using trowel edge, hammer, or power saw.
  • Remove excess mortar with trowels and hand tools, and finish mortar joints with jointing tools, for a sealed, uniform appearance.
