How drywall contractors bill
Prices per board hung and finished or per square foot, with the finish level, ceiling height and board type changing the rate.
Drywall contractors commonly use "Net 14", so payment is due 14 days after the invoice date. Homeowner jobs often take a deposit before board is delivered; work for builders is usually billed Net 15 to Net 30.
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2024: median hourly wage of Drywall and Ceiling Tile Installers $27.95 (employees, not contractor rates).
Drywall Contractor invoicing tips
- Print the finish level (1 to 5) on the invoice, because a level 4 wall looks very different from a level 5 under raking light and the customer should know which one they bought.
- Count sheets by thickness and type: fire-rated and moisture-resistant board cost more, and building inspectors check where each kind was installed.
- Working as a sub, put the general contractor's PO or job number on every invoice and bill hanging and finishing as separate stages so each can be paid after its inspection.
- Return trips caused by other trades, like an electrician cutting new boxes after taping, should be invoiced as patch visits with the date and the reason written beside them.
Drywall Contractor billing disputes to head off
- Nail pops and visible seams after painting are the usual complaint. Writing that the finish level was agreed and checked before paint, with a stated callback window, keeps the discussion factual.
- Ceilings above standard height take longer and need scaffolding; if that is not listed separately, you end up arguing for a higher rate after the work is done.
Work a drywall contractor can bill for
Core tasks of Drywall and Ceiling Tile Installers (O*NET 47-2081.00, O*NET 29.x task statements, CC BY 4.0). Each can become a line on the invoice.
- Measure and mark surfaces to lay out work, according to blueprints or drawings, using tape measures, straightedges or squares, and marking devices.
- Read blueprints or other specifications to determine methods of installation, work procedures, or material or tool requirements.
- Fit and fasten wallboard or drywall into position on wood or metal frameworks, using glue, nails, or screws.
- Hang dry lines to wall moldings to guide positioning of main runners.
- Measure and cut openings in panels or tiles for electrical outlets, windows, vents, plumbing, or other fixtures, using keyhole saws or other cutting tools.
- Hang drywall panels on metal frameworks of walls and ceilings in offices, schools, or other large buildings, using lifts or hoists to adjust panel heights, when necessary.
